Globe Thistle, Echinops
It's high summer in
Central New York

August 4, 2006

The most dominant flowers blooming are the phlox, purple coneflowers, and globe thistle.

The yellow flower above is butter and eggs.

When they are in bud, the globe flowers are prickly.

Then each point spits out a flower.
Bees love it.

Eventually the entire ball is flowers.
This plant shows various stages, including the biggest one getting closer to setting seed.

The seeds spread easily.  They are easy to identify and to pull from the garden if they get pesty.  (You just have to wear gloves.)
