Frances Lehman Loeb Art Center
Vassar

May 26, 2006

The midday brought us rain, so we needed an indoor activity.
This museum was listed in a guidebook, and we decided to check it out.

What a great museum.
The current exhibition was Rembrandt etchings.  They were fun to study, but we got no pictures.

Then we came on this Georgia O'Keefe.
Georgia O'Keefe, "East River No. 3", 1926, Oil on Canvas
This is not our idea of a Georgia O'Keefe.
It is entitled "East River No. 3" 1926.
There were two other O'Keefe's that are more in a familiar style.  Fun to see the contrast.

This Etruscan piece dates from the 6th century BCE.
It is described as Terracotta with black and red pigment.
The museum has titled it:  "Female head antefix"

Etruscan, female head

This Egyptian piece dates from Dynasty 18, 1391-1353 BCE.
It is entitled:  "Head of the Viceroy Merymose from his outer sarcophagus".
The composition is red granite.

The lovely lines and paintings of this pitcher are white black, and red pigment on Terracotta.
This dates from CA 725-700 BCE.
The title of the Rhodian piece (Eastern Greece) is
"Oinochoe, trefoil lipped wild goat style"

Greek Oinochoe, trefoil lipped wild goat style.

My favorite painting is one I had never seen before.
It is by Charles Courtney Curran, (1861-1942) entitled "Shadow Decoration", 1887.
The leaves shadowed on the curtains show depth and contrast.

Well, maybe the next one is my favorite.  Perhaps it shows the future.
It is by Petrus Staverenus, a Dutch artist, active 1634-1654.
The title is "An Old Woman Drinking"

In the square outside the museum we saw this tree.  Just huge.
It's a plane tree.  This is not the widest side of the tree!

I'm glad the weather forced us to find this museum.
It's a gem!

From the center's website, we learn:
"The Frances Lehman Loeb Art Center was founded in 1864 as the Vassar College Art Gallery. The current 36,400 square foot facility, designed by Cesar Pelli and named in honor of the new building’s primary donor, is celebrating its tenth anniversary. The Lehman Loeb Art Center’s collections chart the history of art from antiquity to the present and comprise over 15,000 works, including paintings, sculptures, drawings, prints, photographs, and glass and ceramic wares. Notable holdings include the Warburg Collection of Old Master prints, an important group of Hudson River School paintings given by Matthew Vassar at the college’s inception, and a wide range of works by major European and American twentieth century painters. Vassar was the first college founded with a permanent art collection and gallery, and at any given time, the Permanent Collection Galleries of the Art Center feature approximately 350 works from Vassar’s extensive collections.
