Assateague

Maryland

October 5, 2006
We hoped to see ponies on our trip to Assateague Island.  We saw they had been there.

Then we could see them in the distance.

Ponies in the distance

As we came around a curve, there was one right by the road on the bike path.

Brown and White pony
And then there was another - this one with curly hooves.

I asked a friend about the hooves and she tells me:
"If horses feet are not trimmed this is what happens.  If the horse is running wild the
hoofs should wear down naturally. I don't think it hurts them (it's like having finger
nails too long) but it inhibits them from getting away from predators."

There were lots of birds including this one.

The winds were fierce on the dunes.
Those pants are not wrinkled - and I am not quite that fat - that is wind effect!

The day was lovely.  This photo reminds me of a Wyeth landscape.

The wind really whipped!  We were glad we had brought windbreaker jackets!

The day was beautiful, and it was very different from what we remembered from our last visit, 30 years ago.  At that time, we never saw ponies close-up.

We took many pictures, and we would be happy to share them.  Let me know if you want to see more!
