Downy Woodpecker and baby
 in June, 2007

The baby is on the left.  It does not have a red crown..
There are two suet feeders.   The higher one is a wood frame with hardware cloth to hold the suet in.
We buy suet in the meat department of the supermarket.

These guys have neat expressions.

The baby eagerly watches the parent.
Thanks, Dad!
(Only the males have a red head.)

They can be hard to spot.
(From the size of the beak, I wonder if this is a hairy woodpecker, very similar, but larger, and with a larger beak.)

But the babies squawk a lot, and that helps.
Is this a hairy, too?  It is the same bird as in the tree above.

The Cornell University Lab has lots of information on this interesting bird.
Wild Birds Unlimited also has great pictures.
Of course, both of these pages take you away - you can use your back button to get back here, or you can just go where you may.
