Orchids at Longwood Gardens
 2008
April 14, 2008
Longwood Gardens has a huge conservatory, so a trip there is great at any time of year.
We went in April to enjoy the spring  blooms, but were awed by the orchids.

Longwood's collection of almost 9000 orchids contains about 3200  different species and hybrids, according to their sign.

They have five different greenhouses, each with its own temperature, humidity, and light levels, to meet the varied requirements of the plants.

They rotate the plants with the result that each visit can bring new sights.

By rotating, each plant is at the peak viewing experience.

 The variations amaze.
Some  bear no resemblance to others.  Hard to believe they are related.
It's pretty impressive.
We spent quite a bit of time in the orchid house.
Such variability.

You can just see the birds and insects drawn to them.

Some don't even look like flowers.
This one looks like a flower, though.  It looks like a pansy!

Send comments, please,

We love to hear from folks.
